Thursday, April 20, 6:30 p.m. Aperture will host a panel discussion with curators William A. Ewing and Nathalie Herschdorfer and artists Idris Kahn, Josef Schulz, Angela Strassheim, Shigeru Takato, and Chih-Chien Wang. Exhibition What are young photographers up to at the outset of the twenty-first century? How much do they respect, build on, or reject tradition? This stunning group show sets out to discover answers to these intriguing questions, by presenting the work of fifty extraordinary young photographers from around the world who are already making their mark. An Aperture publication of the same title accompanies the exhibition. The broadest and most enterprising survey of its kind, reGeneration showcases the creativity, ingenuity, and inspiration of fifty up-and-coming artists from around the world all chosen by curators at the world- renowned Musée de l’Elysée in Lausanne. Selected from hundreds of candidates submitted by more than sixty of the world’s top photography schools, the panel’s choice was made with one key question in mind: are these images likely to be known in twenty years’ time? The results show that, as the new century builds momentum, the art of photography is alive and well, and that photographers of extraordinary talent are already making their mark. Three pieces of work by each of the artists will be on display; five continents are represented. About the curators: William A. Ewing is an internationally respected curator, author, and museum director. His exhibitions have been shown at, among others, the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Hayward and Serpentine Galleries, London; the Centre Pompidou, Paris; and the Musée de l’Elysée, Lausanne, where he has served as director since 1996. He has also written numerous highly successful books on the subject of photography. Nathalie Herschdorfer is Associate Curator at the Musée de l’Elysée, Lausanne. An art historian specializing in the history of photography, she has co-curated several major international exhibitions and is a contributing author to a forthcoming book on the subject of the human face. Jean-Christophe Blaser is an art historian and Associate Curator at the Musée de l’Elysée, where he has co-curated many exhibitions. He has contributed texts to numerous art magazines and exhibition catalogs for the Elysée and other institutions and is currently at work on Hot and Cold Landscapes, a major anthology of contemporary photography. reGeneration is accompanied by a stunning book of the same title that will be published by Aperture in North America in April 2006.
