| Backwards DivingSeptember 8, 2006- October 7, 2006Reception: September 7, 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm Claire Oliver Gallery opens the season with the beautiful color and strong content of Amy Morken's new works on paper. Larger in scale (42 x 60 inches) than her previous paintings, Morken continues her quest to find humanity's inner beauty and warn the viewer against the pitfalls of vanity. Concerned with contemporary society's fixation on the superficial, Morken poses questions about the content of our character vs. the content of our wallet.
Distrusting the sublime, Morken creates a luminous and bewildering hybrid of prose and high art, irony and satire, unfettered innocence and bliss juxtaposed with unremitting psychological torment. Her singular narrative is spoken just below our collective consciousness; Morken's intuitive and visceral mixed media works explore a complex visual language in which the artist strips away layers of pretense to expose the site at which our self-improvements only serve to make us more hideous.
Amy Morken has exhibited her works of art in New York, Philadelphia, Boston, Toronto, and Berlin. The artist has been written about in the New York Times and M magazine and has been reviewed in Art in America, Firma and Review Magazines.
