Elizabeth Dee

Elizabeth Dee Gallery was founded under sole ownership in 2002. The gallery is committed to the representation of international artists who employ rigorous practices within an innovative curatorial model. With philosophical inquiry as a platform, our intergenerational program poses questions in the territories of conceptual practice, political agency and shifting modes of discourse relevant to the changing landscape of contemporary art and culture.

Elizabeth Dee has mounted numerous innovative, first and highly acclaimed exhibitions by such artist as Adrian Piper, Josephine Meckseper (debut), Ryan Trecartin (debut), Gareth James, Harry Dodge and Stanya Kahn (debut), Virgil Marti, Mika Tajima/New Humans (debut), and Alex Bag. We have co-produced artist catalogs with Josephine Meckseper (Sternberg Press), and are in production with new publications in 2009 which include Adrian Piper: First Generation Conceptual/Early Political Works 1968-1973, Alex Bag and Meredyth Sparks (with essay Nicolas Bourrioud and Robert Hobbs). The gallery has served as co-producer with Ryan Trecartin in the making of I-BE AREA his first feature length video in 2007 and will co-produce his forthcoming video in 2010.

The gallery’s exhibitions receive regular reviews in a variety of national and international critical contexts, including Texte zur Kunst, Frieze, the New York Times, Artforum, TimeOut, Flash Art and other important art publications and anthologies. Gallery artists are exhibited by and represented in the permanent collections of MoMA, NY, the Guggenheim Museum, The Whitney Museum of American Art, Tate Modern, LACMA, the Museum Ludwig and the New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York, among others. Gallery artists have participated in the most recent Whitney, Lyon, Seville and Moscow Biennials.

Three gallery artists will have solo and two person exhibitions in New York and Los Angeles in major museum contexts in 2008-2009, Alex Bag at the Whitney Museum, New York (solo, catalog), Ryan Trecartin at the Hammer Museum (curated by Ali Subotnick) and Josephine Meckseper at MoMA, New York. European solo museum exhibitions forthcoming in 2009 include Ryan Trecartin at the Migros Museum, Zurich (catalog), Josephine Meckseper at the Migros, Museum, Zurich and a mid-career retrospective at Musée des Beaux Arts, Lausanne, with Renée Green (catalog raisonée with JRP Ringer in collaboration).
