Internationally recognized for its unmatched spirit of inventiveness and commitment to supporting artists, Exit Art has grown from a pioneering alternative art space into a model cultural center for film, video, performance and visual art, music and design. To mark this important occasion and raise much needed funds for the future, Exit Art is coordinating a major benefit auction on Thursday, May 3, 2007. Hosted in Exit Art’s stunning space at 475 Tenth Avenue, the evening will begin with a cocktail and hors d’oeuvres reception and Silent Auction from 6:30 – 8:00pm, with Live Auction bidding from 8:00 – 9:00pm with Auctioneer Dominique Levy. Silent Auction bidding closes at 9:00pm.

Artist Co-Chairs include Shirin Neshat, Roxy Paine, Shahzia Sikander and Rirkrit Tiravanija. Benefit Chairs include Jenette Kahn and Richard J. Massey. This anticipated event features artwork by a range of artists from Exit Art’s impressive history. More than eighty distinguished artists are donating work to this occasion, including Ida Applebroog, Ross Bleckner, Louise Bourgeois, Will Cotton, Michael Combs, Jenny Holzer, David Humphrey, Sigalit Landau, Yigal Ozeri, Jack Pierson, Jennifer Reeder, David Scher, Cindy Sherman, Gary Simmons, Lorna Simpson, Ursula von Rydingsvard and Daniel Zeller, among others.

“Established in 1982 by Jeanette Ingberman and Papo Colo (the remarkable couple who are still its directors),” says artist and senior editor of ArtInfo.com Robert Ayers, “Exit Art has maintained a position at the critical extreme of arts practice in this city, and along the way supported and disseminated the work of a who’s who of radical arts innovators.”

For a quarter-century Exit Art has served as an interdisciplinary laboratory for contemporary culture. Exit Art continues to build on its past strengths: investigating the relationship between art, history and politics. During the first ten years, Exit Art presented artists whose work challenged and raised difficult questions of race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality and equality. In their second decade, the organization identified the emergence of a new generation of young artists with diverse backgrounds and perspectives. Now, Exit Art looks forward to its 25th Anniversary year and the launch of many new and exciting initiatives:

v EXIT UNDERGROUND, a new nighttime venue that includes a film theater and performance space located beneath the main gallery

v Introduction of the CURATORIAL INCUBATOR, a unique program giving the next generation of curators a venue and support to produce major exhibitions

v EXIT ART’S DIGITAL ARCHIVE, an on-line research and educational database of its 25 year history

v UNKNOWN TERRITORIES, Exit Art’s new programming initiative that reflects the convergence of science, art and technology in contemporary culture

An on-line catalogue will be available for viewing beginning April 3, 2007 on www.exitart.org. Absentee bidding opportunities are available.
