Gallery 16

Gallery 16 was founded in 1994 by Griff Williams. What began as a project space has become one of the most vital exhibition spaces in California. Our objective is to advocate for compelling and challenging contemporary work in all media by today's most exciting emerging and mid-career artists. Gallery 16 to date has presented over 200 exhibitions involving 235 artists. Our exhibition schedule involves artists working in a wide range of media, exploring an equally wide range of aesthetic, conceptual and technological issues. If there is one predominant theme running through the exhibitions over the past fourteen years, it is art as a form of research.

Gallery 16 editions, is a collaborative editions program. This includes artists working on site to produce a body of artwork created specifically for the collaborative project. The project was developed as a kind of residency where 9-12 artists a year would be invited to create a unique work that used the technology made available at Urban Digital Color. The program has developed 35 artist books, print editions and multiples. Over 500 total works have been created with some collaboration of traditional and digital technology. Over the years we have had the luxury of working with some of the world’s most notable contemporary artists and have encouraged young emerging artists at the beginning of their careers: William Kentridge, Lynn Hershman Leeson, Harrell Fletcher, Deborah Oropallo, Shaun O’Dell, Rebeca Bollinger, Todd Hido, and Darren Waterston among many others. Our program has involved 14 artists included in Whitney Biennial Exhibitions, several SECA award winners, and their work is included in countless museum collections.
