Luke Gray - Deep SkinsPresented by Gary Snyder Project Space May 14, 2009- July 3, 2009Reception: May 14, 6:00 pm - 8:00 pmLuke GrayGary Snyder/Project Space is pleased to present an exhibition of recent paintings by Luke Gray. This will be Luke Gray’s fourth solo exhibition with Gary Snyder, and will feature a new group of paintings titled “Deep Skins.” In “Deep Skins,” Gray investigates both the act and potential of spontaneous creation – the paintings evoke and express states of nature, mind, and paint while continuing a powerful dialogue with art history. Gray has written: “My artwork is a portal into a subconscious life that I wouldn't have known existed were it not for the work it produced. Spontaneity acts as the spark that sets it free. The paintings are each completed in one unbroken session. When the finished painting is viewed, a decision is made as to whether the piece has the unhinged, non-definitive, and expansive quality I'm looking for. In these paintings I'm trying to freeze a world on the cusp of being.” Luke Gray attended Skowhegan in 1979 and received a B.A. in Fine Arts and Literature at the University of Pennsylvania in 1982. Over the last twenty years, he has exhibited internationally in both group and one-person shows. He has also received major mural commissions, including “TransMission 1998" at 1500 Broadway in Times Square, New York City, and "Universal Health” at The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation in Princeton, New Jersey.
