Online Newspapers

Presented by Madison Square Park

March 20, 2008- April 27, 2008

Olia Lialina & Dragan Espenschied

From its earliest moments, the Web has been a source for global news driven by both amateur journalists and traditional media outlets. Olia Lialina and Dragan Espenschied, collaborators based in Germany, combine the content and look of these disparate media streams in Online Newspapers, a project that imagines how news sites would appear if they were developed by the lay journalists whose homegrown aesthetics defined Web culture before the dot-com boom. For the installation in Madison Square Park the artists will scan editions of four of New York’s most read and debated newspapers and illuminate them with animated gifs and glittery graphics (hallmarks of this amateur Web culture). Through this process the artists create a faux progenitor of today’s news media that speaks not only to constant obsolescence of both technology and style, but also draws out assumptions of what constitutes good and bad design. The newspapers will be shown on four video screens on the grounds of the Shake Shack.
