Margaret Thatcher Projects

Since 1998, Margaret Thatcher Projects has showcased the work of mid-career and emerging artists whose notions of painting stretch beyond the scope of conventional approaches and materials. Originally specializing in reductive abstraction, the gallery’s program has expanded to encompass painting, sculpture, drawing and installation by artists working in both abstract and figurative idioms. The program’s roster of artists, however, is united by a profound interest in process and materials. Throughout the 1980s, Margaret Thatcher served as Administrator of Dia Center for the Arts, working with Dia-supported artists and the Board of Directors to develop the foundation’s public programs, namely, The Lightning Field (Walter De Maria), Chamberlain Gardens (John Chamberlain), the Dan Flavin installation at Bridgehampton, and various other New York City projects. In the early 1990s, Ms. Thatcher began advising art collectors in building contemporary collections. In 1998, Ms. Thatcher expanded her focus and opened Margaret Thatcher Projects in a space on 20th Street in the new Chelsea gallery district. Four years later, the gallery moved into its current location at 511 West 25th Street.
