Primary Spirit, No Short-cuts
Sheila Hecht’s new exhibition continues to engage the mind with questions. What is the “Primary Spirit” of an Abstract Transformation? It is immediately obvious that Hecht takes “No Short-cuts” in answering.
In viewing this collection of current works, one immediately senses the artist’s ongoing struggle to continually explore and reinvent the relationships of art making. Each image presented in this show opens a door into a new understanding of an established visual experience. It is a tug of war between dense shapes and bold colors interacting with varied marks ranging from broad to minimal and fluid lines, in order to arrive at a purer artistic statement. Each new painting draws from the elements of the last, restating previously established visual relationships while simultaneously guiding the viewer to continually re-experience the most basic principles of color, shape, and line and how they interact on the two dimensional picture plane.
Hecht takes us with her as she moves through a wealth of contemporary ideas, never losing her identity as an artist. She invites us to enter a very personal world. This exhibition gets back to the basics of art making while allowing the viewer to enter and experience the artist’s “Primary Spirit”.
