In this riveting new show of oil paintings, Renée Rubin boldly restructures the Old Masters’ landmark self-portraits, bringing to bear her discerning eye and consummate classical technique. Her vivid and luminous portraits honor and reinvigorate her subjects, and have a striking presence, immediacy, and humanity. In a unique touch, the paintings extend beyond the frame within the canvas, creating a startling trompe l’œil effect. As critic Ed McCormack wrote, “Rubin casts the Old Masters in a starker light than that with which they favored themselves, subjecting their features and characters to a scrutiny as unforgiving as a passport photo. And suddenly, despite their period hats and collars, these people become our contemporaries, and we seem to see them more intimately than ever before.”
In 2007 Rubin’s work was selected for a juried show at Pleiades by Rebecca Rabinow, associate curator in the Department of Nineteenth-Century, Modern, and Contemporary Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In 2006 she received the Silver Medal of Honor for oil painting, juried by Robert Birmelin, at the Salmagundi Club, and was also the recipient of the Audubon Artists’ Beatrice Jackson Award. She has participated in numerous solo and group shows at the Reuben Gallery and has exhibited at the Martha Jackson Gallery and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.
Born in Brooklyn, Rubin has resided in New York City all of her life.
