| Home Away From HomeMay 21, 2009- July 31, 2009Reception: May 21, 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm Ricco/Maresca Gallery is pleased to introduce the 3D lenticular photographs of Paul Aaron Johnson. In his exhibition, Home Away From Home, Paul Aaron Johnson explores the subject of the contemporary American campsite through 3D imaging.
Each of Johnson's lenticular prints incorporates 24 different images of the same subject. These images are run through an interlacing software program, which cuts the images into very narrow strips, and then interlaces these strips to create a printable interlaced image. This resulting image is printed onto paper. The paper print and plastic lenticular lens sheet are then aligned by hand and laminated together. The lenticular lens screen is comprised of a series of semi-cylindrical lenses, or "lenticules". Because each lenticule is the focal length of the thickness of the plastic sheet, and magnifies a very thin strip of the image, a 3D effect is created. Similarly, as the viewer's angle of sight changes, the image appears to move. Johnson has developed unique techniques for both digital lenticular photography and digital lenticular printing, which enable him to produce a print that is both more permanent and higher in resolution.
Paul Aaron Johnson was born in Detroit, Michigan and currently lives and works in New York City. Johnson has been working as an animator, while shooting 3D photography since 1979. His 3D animation film, Mandala, was shown at The Be Film Underground Film Festival 2009, NYC. Johnson has also done lenticular projects for the The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Ball-Nogues Architect, and the "Top of the Rock" at Rockefeller Center.
