Freedom Fighters Project

Presented by Rush Arts Gallery

January 29, 2006- March 19, 2006

Duane Smith, Jason Scott Jones, Michael Paul Britto, Arvay Adams

Fantasy merges with American history in The Freedom Fighters Project: American Legends Re-Imagined - where fact flirts with fiction - as abolitionist of the 19th century are re-imagined on movie posters as Blaxploitation superstars.

Influenced by stories of American Legends, Blaxploitation iconography, and Pulp Fiction propaganda the Freedom Fighters Project fuses illustration, design, and video in this collaborative exhibition that boldly re-invents history while exploring the relationship between the real and imagined.

“The Freedom Fighters Project examines the discourse of black icons from a wide range of subject positions and perspectives–humor, satire, irony. The artist in this exhibiton use the poster as a platform to turn these histories on their heads by conflating and scattering time, narrative and allegory while challenging the notion of the black body-as-nation-as-image, as well as super moral and immoral icon” -LeRonn Brooks, guest writer
