Rona Pondick 2006Presented by Sonnabend March 25, 2006- April 22, 2006Rona PondickOn March 25, 2006 the Sonnabend Gallery will open an exhibition of new sculptures by Rona Pondick.Continuing her work of the last 10 years, these sculptures are hybrid forms that seamlessly merge parts of the artist’s body with animals and trees, grafts between species that are echoed in her technique that brings together traditional hand-modeling and three dimensional computer manipulation. In “Cat” the hand grows out of a cat body half its size and a tiny head seems to sleep nestled on it. Scanning and other computer manipulations were used in order to reduce the size of the head and increase the size of the hand. The skin on this monumental hand looks like silk moiré, a result of Pondick combining the texture of skin with marks from the computer process. The hair in “Mouse” is made by hand. The surfaces of the animal parts in “Mouse,” “Otter,” “Muskrat,” and “Cat” are treated as if they are hairless and brought to a mirror finish. In the “Monkey with Hair” pieces the bodies are covered with synthetic hair. “Crimson Queen Maple”, a stainless steel tree with a 12 foot diameter, is dotted with computer rendered heads the size of tiny buds. In “Azalea,” “HC Azalea” and “Helen Curtis” computer generated hands the size of leaves emerge from the branches. Pondick is interested in the nature of materials and how their character affects what we see. In her work the material presence of the pieces can’t be separated from the emotions they evoke. The emphasis on transformation and metamorphosis in her hybrid forms suggests that our animal and human natures are in constant flux. Reviews of Rona Pondick 2006
