On March 30th, 2006 the SPIKE GALLERY will open an exhibition of a series of work by photographer DAVID LEVINTHAL.

We make, we seek, and finally we enjoy, the contrivance of all experience. We fill our lives not with experience, but with the images of experience.

- Daniel Boorstin

Levinthal’s practice is grounded in a thirst (one could say, almost a longing) for imformation, and he is not alone among contemporary artists in plundering the visual archives of history to explore myth and memory. Like Barabara Kruger, Gerhard Richter, and Christian Boltanski, for instance, Levinthal’s commentaries on history and contemporary culture rely heavily on a reworking of photographic imagery and visual strategies, ultimately recasting the photographic in a distinctly different role.

- Charles Stainback

LEVINTHAL lives and works in New York City. He has exhibited extensively throughout the world for the last 30 years. His work is represented in many public collections including The Brooklyn Museum, Centre Pompidou, The International Center of Photography, Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY, Museum of Modern Art, NY, and Whitney Museum of American Art, NY, among others.
