Stux Gallery presents the New York premiere of Martha Colburn’s new film, Meet Me In Wichita (2007), which was featured at this year’s renowned Sundance Film Festival. Colburn’s work utilizes elements of cultural detritus to comment on consumerism, politics, sexuality, and cultural memory. Through a collage of live action (paint-on-glass) animations, found footage and documentary filmmaking techniques, her works are a disturbing, and at times humorous take on pop culture.
Meet Me In Wichita (2007) is a scathing indictment of America's arguably dangerously naïve foreign-policy. The film is a play between fact, fiction, politics, fantasy, terror and morality. Using paint-on glass animation and cutout paper puppets, this film features Osama Bin Laden (embodying several characters from the Wizard of Oz) and Dorothy engaged in a battle between the dark forces (and faces) of Evil.
Martha Colburn has been featured in exhibitions and film festivals around the world including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY; P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, Queens, NY; Stux Gallery, NY; Musee d Art Moderne et Contemporain de Strasbourg, France; Museum of Contemporary Art, Lyon, France; Serpentine Gallery, London, UK; Cannes Film Festival, France; Anthology Film Archive, New York, NY; Contemporary Art Center, Vilnius, LT; Nanjing Art Institute Gallery, Nanjing, China; Harvard Film Archive, Cambridge, MA; Rotterdam International Film Festival, Rotterdam, NL; Sundance Film Festival, Park City, UT; New York Underground Film Festival, New York, NY.
