For over three decades, New York-based artist Matt Mullican (b. 1951, Santa Monica, CA) has created a complex body of work concerned with systems of knowledge, meaning, language, and signification. Since the end of the 1970s, he has also conducted performances and created drawings while under hypnosis as a means to explore the nature of behavior. "Matt Mullican: A Drawing Translates the Way of Thinking" includes over 200 works from throughout Mullican’s artistic career, emphasizing the role of drawing in his attempt to understand, organize, and categorize experience. Mullican’s practice, surveyed through drawings, collages, video, and installation, confronts the nature of subjective understanding, rationality, perception, and cognition—in essence proposing a ‘picture’ of the world through the medium of drawing. Curated by João Ribas.

As part of the exhibition, The Drawing Center will present "Matt Mullican: In Performance," a series of rarely-seen videos from the past 30 years featuring performances by the artist under hypnosis. Each screening will be introduced by a brief conversation between exhibition curator João Ribas and curatorial assistant Rachel Liebowitz. Space is limited and will be available on a first-come, first-seated basis. Program dates: December 11 at 6:30 pm, January 7 at 6:30 pm, January 14 at 6:30 pm, January 24 at 4 pm.

Reviews of Matt Mullican: A Drawing Translates the Way of Thinking

New York Times
December 19, 2008
Ken Johnson"Drawing is rarely an end in itself for contemporary artists. For Matt Mullican it serves as an investigatory, note-taking tool in a vast program of semiotic research. This means that much of the material in this intermittently intriguing but generally numbing exhibition of more than 200 pieces will mean less to the average viewer than it presumably does to the artist himself...."
