Amazon Warriors: From Myth to Reality January 13th – February 7th '09

Reception - Thursday , January 15th , 5 - 8, 2009 Artist Interviewed By Vernita Nemec, Former Director, "Artists Talk on Art" Saturday , January 17th, 4 – 5 pm Ancient Music Performance - Saturday , January 24th , 2 – 4 pm Artist's demonstration - imprinting in clay , TBA

Sunlight reflected off the breastplates of a thousand armored Warriors. Golden insignia of rank glowed bright on the breastplate, powerful symbols of the ancient Bird Goddess. The Warrior felt the power flow through her, making her body invincible, her will indomitable, her victory inevitable.

Were there ever a thousand Amazons gathered at once?

According to Homer, Troy expected to win against the Greeks once their allies, the Amazons, arrived. No less a number could have had an impact against the formidable Greek forces. This exhibition examines the artist's vision of the smallest fighting unit from a village just north of the Black Sea circa 1500-2000 B.C.E. Sixteen breastplates, representing three ranks based on quadrants of the compass comprise the main body of the work. Hutzell asks the viewer to imagine "what if" such a cache of ancient women's body armor were found - what impact, if any, might such a discovery have on our collective psyche?

Jain Hutzell's presentation of Amazon Warrior Breastplates re-establishes the connection between these valorous women and their long lost battle armor. Not only has the artist created the life-size “artifacts” themselves in shimmering color and exquisite detail, she has also re-established the metaphorical relationship between the origins of their power and its' symbols on the pieces themselves. Rendered in clay with an impressive range of glazes, both colored and metallic, the breastplates' “woven” body is created by an overlaid template of lace that imprints intricate and impressive patterns.

Jain Hutzell resides and creates in Northern California. Working in a variety of media, her past canvasses, sculptures, reside on college campuses, in private homes, and galleries. For more information, please contact the gallery.
