Bernice Faegenburg

NYC: Viridian Artists is pleased to present "PAINTINGS LARGE & SMALL" by Bernice Faegenburg. The exhibit extends from May 2nd through 20th, with an opening reception Saturday, May 6th, 4– 6 pm.

For Faegenburg, art and life have always been intertwined. Her art flows into all corners of her home & mind, moving from the surfaces of every day life, to the more rarified gallery walls to be seen and admired by those who come looking for the other world that art creates. Her images never disappoint, always serving as a respite from the ordinariness of everyday living.

Faegenburg has always been committed to experimentation and each year learns a new creative skill to add to an already large repertoire that includes egg tempera, Japanese brush painting, photo transferring and a variety of methods of printmaking. For her last solo show at Viridian, she began incorporating her photography via the computer. For this exhibit, the artist continues her struggle beyond just "doing" by focusing on Japanese brush painting over layers of rice paper collaged to canvas with the layers of transparency revealing what's underneath: photo images, gestures of paint, fragments of images and ideas.

She has always been a traveler and collector of souvenirs from her life journeys, using organic fragments of memories and images as her palette. Filling her sketchbook with ideas gleaned from her life, she then copies or cuts pieces from them to incorporate directly into larger work. Not figurative, more often her sketchbook jottings are juxtapositions of colors and shapes that will later become “conversations” on canvas and rice papers.

Believing that in life one must deal with what comes, Faegenburg approaches her art similarly, allowing her imagery to emerge instinctively, growing out of her experience and intuition. For her, the most important part of art making is the doing, for she is an artist to whom process is as important as the end result. She picks a path and follows wherever it leads her, sometimes through frustration, but always she learns and continues towards “the unknown” where only truly original art can lead.

The artist did undergraduate work at the Tyler School of Fine Arts of Temple University in Philadelphia. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Temple and a Masters in Art Education from C.W. Post College. This past December, her paintings were included in the Florence Biennial.
