| Recent WorkJune 13, 2006- July 1, 2006Reception: June 13, 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm Viridian Artists, Inc. is pleased to present the recent sculptures of Stephen Garmey. This will be Garmey’s 9th exhibition at Viridian, The show opens Tuesday June 13 and continues through Saturday, July1. There will be a reception for the artist on Tuesday evening, June 13th, 5-7 PM.
In this striking new group of works, Garmey continues to investigate, through simplicity of form, the solidity and vitality of wood. Earlier in his career the artist worked in steel as well as wood, but whatever his choice of media, he brings to the work a veneration for his material, virtually making wood the subject of his art. Juxtaposing and delicately balancing his simple forms, Garmey’s reverent approach allows the wood to speak its own language.
Although constructed of wood, not stone, more than one reviewer has said the essence and tension in Garmey’s works recalls Stonehenge or the Straits of Corinth. The works are modest in size, but the artist’s mastery brings a sense of massiveness to their sculptural presence. Mr. Garmey studied at the Columbia University School of Architecture as well as the School of the Arts and not surprisingly, possesses a “rugged sense of architectural space”, says reviewer Addison Parks.
Besides solo and group exhibitions at Viridian Artists, Garmey has shown at numerous galleries and sculpture sites in New York as well as throughout the US.
Stephen Garmey lives and works in New York City.
