Judith Tummino Exhibition Sojourn: Paintings from Italy and the Chesapeake Bay Dates November 3-28, 2009 Reception Thursday, November 5, 2009, 5-8 PM Viridian Artists Inc. is pleased to present oil paintings by Judith Tummino who found inspiration both in Italy and on the shoreline of the Chesapeake Bay.

By painting on location Tummino’s landscapes capture the essence of a moment. Viewing the infinite changes in light and shadow, she reduces the landscape to tonal impressions. Her love of the landscape is shown in her work: the landscape -constantly changing by the assault of ever-growing population or by the changes of time and season.

The paintings of the Chesapeake Bay were painted in two locations, a small inlet known as "South Beach" or the "Pushover" to the locals, and the mouth of Parker's Creek.

In "South Beach, Early Morning" one can see through the canopy of branches and the trees a glimpse of the pier and cliffs at Governors Run on the Chesapeake Bay in the distance. Almost totally devoid of human presence, one sees reference to the use of the beach by the solitary flag pole in the foreground, the bench and the rails of the staircase to the beach.

Other paintings depict the mouth of Parker's Creek. This isolated area forms a delicate balance of nature, light and man-made pylons. The presence of the solitary painter is felt in her canvases, which show her love of this rare protected area of the Chesapeake Bay.

The paintings in Italy depict small towns, fields in Umbria, and scenes in Rome. In these paintings of Italy, Tummino alternates between searching for sunlight reflected on sun-washed buildings to open fields with the patchwork design of sunflowers, amid cedar trees.

Her love of the landscape centers on time and the changes that inevitably come with it.

Judith Tummino studied painting at Colorado State University, Western Michigan University, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the International School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture in Umbria, Italy. Her work is in private and corporate collections throughout the United States and Italy. Group shows include the Muskegon Museum of Art, the Grand Rapids Art Museum and the Chelsea District of New York. Solo exhibitions have been in Michigan and Ohio.
