"SPRING SCENE"
May 5 -30, 2009
Reception: Saturday , May 16th , 3-6 p.m.
Viridian Artists Inc. is pleased to present new and recent works on canvas By Bernice Faegenburg.
”Spring Scene” is a collection of mixed media works, epitomized by arresting triptych entitled “ Renewal “, a magnificent 90” wide triptych , in which meticulously placed silk- screened, painted and collaged images of abstract and organic foliage, flowers and birds are layered over a faintly seen grid pattern. Like a window that allows us to behold the world behind its glass, the “Renewal” provokes desire to sneak between it's panels of color and collages, to unveil those hidden images peeking out from behind alternating layers of paint and paper. Sporadic panels of blue are left untouched representing perfection of clear Spring sky completing a Spring scene.
In “Blue Iris”, silk-screened depictions of iris from Faegenburg's garden are repeatedly set on a painted background. The flowers , no longer present in the garden, but still strongly remembered by artist are morphed and multiplied over the “Spring Scene”, proclaiming the vigor and continuity trough transformation.
" Garden” is a three part fan featuring brush- painted stalks of willowy bamboo poised against a sky-like background with splashes of color suggesting a flowery garden scene with lavish verdure. The fan shaped construction and the brush painted bamboo indicate the artist's long fascination with Asian elements.
" Spring Scene “ reminiscence the annual rebirth brought on by Spring. Voltaire has written, “ We must cultivate our garden”. Bernice Faegenburg appears to be doing just that.
