Barbara Astman

Barbara Astman has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions both in Canada and internationally since the early 1970s. She has work in public collections in Canada the United States and Europe. Astman has an Associates Degree from the Rochester Institute of Technology, School for American Craftsmen and holds an AOCA from the Ontario College of Art. Active in the Toronto arts community, Astman has sat on numerous boards and advisory committees. She is a Professor in the Faculty of Art at the Ontario College of Art & Design.
In 1995 a retrospective titled: Barbara Astman: Personal/Persona A 20 Year Survey Exhibition opened at the Art Gallery of Hamilton; this exhibition toured the following year to numerous Canadian museums. She is represented by the Corkin Gallery, Toronto.
Astman has been involved in public art projects since the mid eighties and in 1987 she completed a floor installation for the Calgary Winter Olympics. In 2000, Astman completed site-specific photographic murals for The Portal Project for the Baycrest Centre for Geriatric Care in Toronto. Most recently, she completed a public art installation for the new Canadian Embassy in Berlin, Germany.
Currently Astman has been engaged with a curatorial project for the AGO, opening November 2008 and completing an extensive public art project in Toronto. Astman will be exhibiting a new body of work at the Corkin Gallery this spring, 2009.
