Biography
Before completing a first class honours degree in Photography at the Queensland College of Art in 2002, Priscilla Bracks studied and practiced law in Australia. This education was pivotal in the development of her interest in relationships between human nature, social justice, culture, media and contemporary issues.
Bracks actively explores these phenomena through her art, which encompasses mediums such as photography, illustration, installation and new-media art.
Her work gained international attention in 2007, when the image Bearded Orientals: Making the Empire Cross, was selected as a finalist in the Blake Prize for Religious Art. This lenticular (holographic) image depicting merging portraits of Jesus Christ and Osama Bin Laden was described as both blasphemy and an insightful work about the rise of iconic figures (both idyllic and unsavoury).
The image arose from a larger body of work entitled Making the Empire Cross, in which Bracks explored how contemporary media and popular culture shape personal identity and beliefs, and the role of media in the development of received versions of history and truth.
